The ASCENO design duo share their thoughts and inspiration behind the RESORT + SS18 collections, and the shoot location for the season.
Q. When did you first hear about, or visit Comporta?
Last Summer, Poppy and I spent some time with friends in Comporta and fell in love with the untrammeled landscape, the miles of empty beaches, the dense forests of umbrella pines and gnarled cork trees and the laid-back vibe. It felt like the perfect place for ASCENO, and our Resort + SS18 collection design started here. We wanted to created a collection that embodied this relaxed way of life.
My family and I have been going to Portugal on holidays since I was quite young. We fell in love with Lisbon, and overtime our desire to explore the country further grew. Comporta just seemed ideal because of its undiscovered vibe - we were right.
Q. What stood out the most to you about our shoot location, Les Terrases de Comporta?
Run by a French couple who are passionate about architecture, Les Terrasses de Comporta and its raw concrete properties stand out against an area known for its nature reserve, rice fields and pine trees. The minimalist cubic shapes, flooded with natural light, have a mostly whitewashed interior with orange accents and natural wood. Huge glass doors open onto a little slice of nature, with a narrow infinity pool and patio overlooking the reserve, surrounding mountains and charming village of Melides. The Portuguese hideaway seemed a perfect fit for this collection. The collection is characterized by pops of colour and modern tailoring for effortless dressing. Les Terrasses de Comporta with its clean lines and relaxed feel was the perfect back drop for the Resort + SS18 colletion.
The architectural details of the setting really stood out to me. Things like the clean lines of the buildings, the textured stone walls, or the unique angular shape of the pool - all very eye-catching.
Q. How important was the shoot location in framing the collections?
Travel is at the heart of everything we do and one thing that always pulls our collections together is an insatiable desire to travel the world and look effortlessly cool while doing so. Comporta felt like the perfect back drop for the Resort + SS18 collection with its under the radar cool and natural beauty. The bold stripes, laid-back pyjamas, understated linens and crisp cottons felt very at home at this coastal retreat. The area is a protected nature reserve and has remained untouched. People come to Comporta as it reminds them of Ibiza in the 80's or the Hamptons in the 90's
We wanted somewhere that would really highlight the pieces, not drown them out. What was great about Les Terasses de Comporta was the simple, neutral colours of the grounds, they really accented the vivid colours in the collection. Also, as Lauren mentioned, travel is at the heart of our brand, so exploring the world and finding spectacular locations that speak to this key aspect ties in perfectly.
Q. What are the key influences behind the collection?
Lauren & Poppy:
- Understated luxury, relaxed silhouettes, easy summer dressing that feels beautiful to wear but effortless.
- Sleek swimwear in bold stripes, crisp cottons, understated linens, oversized tailoring makes daytime Summer dressing effortless.
- Feminine palette for Resort 18, and pops of colour for Spring Summer.
- Strong feminity in punchy bights and modern silhouettes
- We wanted to create a collection that is the epitome of easy vacation style.
Q. If a friend or family member only had one day to spend in the area, what is the number one thing that you would recommend?
Lauren & Poppy:
Days here are unhurried. It's an easy, breezy existence. The focus is the beach.
There is a handful of restaurants along this glorious stretch, wooden creations on stilts, clinging to the top of the dunes. At Praia da Comporta, Comporta Café and Restaurante Ilha do Arroz stand guard. Both very laid back spots for beach lunches. At Carvalhal beach, there's the unassuming O Dinis Bar do Pescadores for catch of the day. Later at night, there's phenomenal seafood, at Dona Bia.
Q. Why do you think the area has become so popular in recent years?
It feels like an escape - completely laid-back.
The area really has come be known as the new Ibiza, and for good reason. Also, recently, more than ever the area has been getting well-deserved recognition in some of the world's most respected publications, such as Condé Nast Traveller.
Q. What are your "must pack" items for a trip like this, and what items do you always carry with you when touring around?
Espadrilles of all varieties, a basket, ASCENO linens and the Neutral bold stripe one piece for hot lazy beach days. The jet black micro stripe neck tie dress for relaxed warm evenings.
For me, it has to be the Jet Black Polka Dress and the Terracotta Classic One Piece. They're my absolute favourites.
